German holiday delays the change of throne
Actually everything seemed clear: October 3. Should go down in the history books as a historical day. On this date, Grand Duke Henri officially wanted to hand over the scepter to his son, hereditary grandfather Guillaume. But as the « Luxemburger Word » learned from well -informed circles, the government has now made a line through this planning. The reason? A holiday in Germany. The day of German unity takes place exactly on the day on which the change of throne is planned.
Despite the change of throne: No public holiday on October 3rd
Every year this holiday attracts thousands of German visitors to Luxembourg. The petrol stations, tobacco shops and in the shopping streets of the capital are then very busy. What is a blessing for retail could, however, prove to be a stumbling block for the planned celebrations for changing the throne.
Visitor rush awaited from Germany
Because originally a big folk festival was planned – possibly with concerts and of course the solemn state act. But the government is now afraid that the masses of German tourists could make the process considerably more difficult. Many Luxembourgers would have to work on this day to cope with the rush of visitors, while others would rather stay at home out of concern in front of crowded streets.

In order not to endanger the celebrations, the government has therefore set a new date for the change of throne: October 31. This decision brings with it several advantages. On the one hand, the new appointment falls on the eve of an existing holiday – All Saints’ Day on November 1st. On the other hand, events on Halloween, which is also celebrated in this country, can be combined with the festival day. But that’s not all: it was decided to introduce October 31 as a legal holiday, at least for this year.

Nevertheless, the new regulation for many citizens is likely to cause enthusiasm.
There is no clear rules for the deployment of personnel at the Grand Ducal Court
Official confirmations are still pending, but behind the scenes there is already a high pressure on the new plans. According to LW information, a special regulation should already be considered, according to which October 31 could be permanently established as a holiday. It remains to be seen whether this change will actually prevail.
