German government wants to perform border controls, but according to police union, agents are already on their toes
According to the largest German police union GDP, the intensive border controls in the longer term cannot be kept. Agents can only handle the current workload for a few weeks. That is what the union says German media. It seems like a response to the plans of the German Minister of the Interior, Alexander Dobrindt (CDU/CSU), who wants to perform the number of border controls.
The German Christian Democrats, who form a government together with the SPD, promised voters to conduct a harder migration policy. On May 7, the newly installed Minister Dobrindt announced new asylum plans. Since then, illegal migrants can also be sent away from the German border if they had already submitted an asylum application to another EU country. According to Minister Dobrindt, the number of asylum changes doubled within a week. Children and pregnant women are not allowed to be sent away at the border, according to Weekblad Die Zeit.
More than a thousand agents are currently monitoring the German border crossings. The police association says that the minister’s plans cannot be kept up. « (The stricter border control) we succeed alone because duty rosters have been adjusted, the training courses have been suspended and the limiting of the number of overtime has stopped, » says federal chairman Andreas Rosskopf Monday according to NTV. « It is clear: the intensive checks can only hold the police for a few weeks. »
Coalition partner SPD finds the stricter border controls and uncoordinated rejections for asylum seekers risky. In terms of migration, Germany can « only be successful with neighboring countries, » says Bundestag member Lars Castellucci to NTV. He fears that neighboring countries will also switch to national asylum measures.
