The Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev described the situation with the Bulgarian prosecutor at the European Prosecutor’s Office Teodora Georgieva as an extremely worrying for Bulgaria and the fact that she was temporarily removed from office while an administrative inspection was underway. The Minister also commented on the Ordinance on the payment of legal aid in connection with the remuneration, saying that the work on the draft amendment was completed, but the problem is not normative but financial. Georgiev said that a lawyer cannot be expected to call for a victim of domestic violence in the middle of the night, to take the case for BGN 30 and to rely on quality legal work.
The minister added that the Legal Aid Fund is BGN 10 million and is being worked on to update the remuneration, talk with the Bar. Georgiev explained that it was envisaged that after the adoption of the ordinance, it would start acting with a delayed action while providing funds for the increase.
