General Health Inspection Opens Audit to the use of AI in the NHS

The General Inspection of Health Activities (IGAS) began an audit to the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the entities of the National Health Service (NHS). The audit will evaluate the sources of financing, security and respect for the rights of users.

In a note released on the site, Igas explains that this audit aims to contribute to the responsible use of AI in the NHS, evaluating the artificial intelligence strategy in public health services and the investment in training and training of professionals.

The data management policy used by AI, information security and robustness of systems and the impact of artificial intelligence are other areas in focus in this audit.

Last week, the medical order president warned that artificial intelligence cannot replace a doctor. « It is essential to say that AI is not, nor can it be, a substitute for clinical judgment, medical experience or human contact. The diagnosis is an essential part of the medical act, which involves not only objective data, but also contextual interpretation, active listening and empathy, » said Carlos Cortes.

The president added that AI should be viewed as a clinical decision support tool and not as an autonomous diagnostic agent. Carlos Cortes says he lacks « robust scientific evidence, strict validation mechanisms and, above all, algorithmic transparency that allows doctors to understand and trust the suggested decisions. »

To the Lusa Agency, Carlos Cortes also defended the creation of a national health agency for health, as a way to prevent wrong diagnoses and medical disinformation.
