GDP, Italy grows more than France. But the prices go up to the supermarket

Rome as Paris for per capita income. But the increasingly expensive shopping cart pushes inflation to 1.7%

In May, inflation in Italy records a slight braking by touching the lowest level since last February: + 1.7% compared to 2024 – ISTAT certifies – from 1.9% of April. But this decline does not correspond to a decrease in prices for consumers and families who instead find a increasingly expensive shopping cart: The price of food assets, for the care of the home and the person, grew from +2.6% of May 2024 to +3.1% in 2025. And also high -frequency products have passed from +1.6% of May 2024 to +1.7% of May 2025 In particular, regulatory regulatory – gas and electricity decrease -, from +29.1% of a year ago to +31.7%. Consumer associations launch the alarm on the « budgets of families » and the oppositions attack the government by remembering « the wages of the stops and the exorbitant cost of the bills » (Italy Viva) and the risk « for the families of having to ask for a loan to the banks to shop » (five stars).

However Istat also records that in the first quarter of 2025 the Italian GDP grew by 0.3%, more than France, compared to the previous quarter and, especially by 0.7% compared to the first three months of 2024, doing better than the preliminary estimate of 0.6%. And « the growth acquired for 2025 goes down 0.5% from 0.4% », underlines the institute. The objective set by the Def, the economy and finance document drawn up by the government for 2025 is +0.6%, not so unreachable, therefore, despite the context of global uncertainty caused above all by the policy of the US president Donald Trump. Istat explains that the expense of families (albeit just for 0.1%), exports (+2.8%) and fixed investments (+1.6%). Imports are also growing: +2.6%.

But to look beyond the border, the numbers of France strikes where the GDP in the first quarter 2025 grew only by 0.1%, while Germany records a +0.4%and the United States drop by 0.1%. « Istat certifies a better positive growth than other European countries, » comments with satisfaction the Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgettia result obtained thanks « to the effectiveness of the economic policies adopted by the executive ». The euro area recorded a +0.3% compared to the previous quarter and +1.2% compared to the first quarter 2024.

The trade associations remain cautious, while speaking of « unexpected stability » for the Italian economy. Confesercenti underlines « our growth reduced to zero point » and recalls that the theme of consumption remains a priority. For Federdistribution « remains a context of strong uncertainty » and asks « shared actions also in the European context ». While for Confcommercio « serious clues to uncertainty remain, but overall it can be well hoped for the continuation of the year ».

A few days ago the estimate of the European Commission on Pro-capita GDP for the same PIE PURCHASE OF THE EUROZONA according to which the Italian data reached France by erasing a waste that in 2020 was 10.1% and 8.8% in 2015 is a few days ago. The distance from the average of the Eurozone went from 10.7% of 2020 to 5.9%. However, figures that must be connected to the prices, which see a southern Italy with more slowed dynamics, to the demographic crisis with an ever lower number of new born in Italy, to the employees, which grow but in sectors with low added value.
