Gas emissions cover – altaposten.no
Over the past few years, Equinor’s gas plant on Melkøya outside Hammerfest has been involved in a number of incidents, including gas leaks and emissions. According to NRK, since the opening in 2007, there have been over 60 incidents with gas emissions, fire and smoke development at the plant.
Despite these serious incidents, the coverage of local media, especially Amedia-owned newspapers in Finnmark, has been remarkably limited. While national media such as NRK and Dagsavisen have reported on these events and their consequences, local newspapers have largely failed to give the case the attention it deserves.
This lack of local media coverage raises questions about editorial independence and willingness to keep local authorities and companies responsible. It is crucial for Finnmark communities to be informed of events that can affect their health and the environment.
The Center Party is concerned about this silence. We believe that the local press has a responsibility to inform the population of important events in their immediate area, especially when it comes to health and environmental issues.
We encourage Amedia and other local media to strengthen their coverage of such issues and ensure that the citizens of Finnmark get the information they need to make informed decisions.
