Garden & balcony: Create drinking area for birds and insects

If the temperatures rise in summer, not only do we long for a refreshing cooling. Wild animals and insects are also looking for water. Animal lovers with a garden or balcony can help you.

Because there is also the rain, animals cannot rely on natural water sources such as ponds or puddles. Then there is a risk that you have dirty water – or harmful liquids such as buried lemonade.

Therefore, it makes sense to supply wild animals with water all year round, says biologist Ursula Bauer from Aktion Tier. Simply place one or more soaks – for example on a stake, on the floor or hanging.

Shady, clear, clean

The best thing is a shady spot, because the water stays cool longer and does not evaporate so quickly. If possible, the water point should be attached to a clear location so that birds quickly notice enemies. Ideally, the potions are set up in such a way that it cannot be reached for cats.

There are suitable models in stores, but also a look at your own cupboards can be worthwhile. Often there is already a suitable container such as a glazed flower coaster or an old bowl.

« Since birds like to bathe in the potions, they should be cleaned thoroughly every day and filled with fresh tap water to avoid the spread of diseases, » says biologist Bauer.

The NABU Berlin recommends that boiling water – please do not use chemistry.

And for insects?

According to the nature conservation association, a flat shell is suitable for insects, in which you put stones that protrude half out of the water. They serve bees, bees and Co. as an exit aid. You can spread some moss on the edge. The insect drinks are best in a sunny and wind -protected place near insect -friendly plants.
