From May 1, excise taxes on fuel, gas and electricity will grow in Estonia
From May 1, changes in the excise policy come into force in Estonia, which will lead to an increase in fuel prices and energy resources. The most changes will affect diesel fuel – the excise tax on it will increase by about 7 percent, which means the rise in the cost of the retail price by 13-14 cents per liter. For motorists and transport companies, this will be a noticeable additional consumption, especially against the background of not the lowest fuel prices.
Changes will affect other types of energy resources. The excise tax on natural gas will grow by almost 20 percent, and for electricity-immediately by 45 percent, from one to 1.45 euros per megavatt-hour. The excise tax on liquefied gas will also increase, also by about 20 percent. At the same time, excise tax on special diesel fuel, which is used, for example, in agriculture, will remain at the same level – 0.021 euros per liter.

The Estonian government explains the increase in the desire to return excise taxes to the level that existed before the pandemic. For several years, starting from the Covid-19 crisis, the rates were reduced to support the economy and the population. Now excise taxes will gradually increase and by May 1, 2027 will return to pre -crisis values.
It is expected that the growth of excise taxes will affect not only drivers, but also the cost of many goods and services. An increase in transportation costs may affect prices in stores and in the field of logistics. Drivers should take into account the changes in their expenses and, if possible, refuel until the beginning of May, while the old bets operate.
