From Henri to Guillaume: puzzle rates for important details

When Grand-Duc Héritier Guillaume is crowned the Grand Duke of Luxembourg on October 3, this will also be noticeable on the service and parade uniforms of the police, army, judiciary, customs administration and CGDIS. It is a small but important detail when the mandatory and Grand Duke Henri representative « H » monogram on collar mirror and shoulder flaps will be replaced by a « G » variant for Guillaume at the latest for the inauguration ceremony. The Luxembourg State Flag will also be affected by the redesign.

But until then it seems to be a long way. The Maison du Grand-DUC was not very informed when asked about the « word » about the exact procedure, costs, responsibilities and quantities. But not only there seems to be unclear about the exact processes: « After consultation with the Maison du Grand-Duc and the Ministry of the Interior, all information in this regard will be communicated at a later date of the press, » was the answer from the State Ministry.

Sluggish clarification for costs and schedule

It is also questionable whether the schedule can be met by October 3. In any case, the police do not expect the new monograms to be made on all uniforms in good time for changing the throne; The officials of the Grand Ducal Palace would therefore initially be a priority.

With good will, the fact that important information does not circulate less than half a year before the introduction of Guillaum in the positions that are speaking cannot circulate with the fact that the last comprehensive change was more than 25 years ago – so a whole generation.

However, it is more likely that so far only a few considerations have been made about this detail of the change of throne in early October. After all: After several email changes and energetic follow -up, there were brief but rather unsatisfactory answers.

The new, Grand Ducal Monogram was « designed by a Luxembourg graphic artist »; The costs of the practical change on the uniforms are the respective administrations of the state institutions concerned. The effort for this varies.

If only the pin is exchanged at the army, the shoulder flaps may have to be extensively re-sewn in the judiciary and CGDIS. The police, on the other hand, explained that only the pin is exchanged at the headgear – also called Schako – while the monogram has to be completely rebuilt for ceremonial uniforms. However, none of the contacts that have been contacted were speaking about the costs incurred – the same applies to the number of monograms to be made.

There is therefore no reasonably reliable cost estimate. In any case, in Luxembourg, online prices per PIN-depending on the execution and complexity-vary between 2.50 and 5 euros each.

Interesting: Every office, be it the army, police or CGDIS, would have its own suppliers. « The only Luxembourg company that worked in this area hired its activities last year, » writes the Maison du Grand-Duc.

Legally regulated: Monogram presentation follows in autumn

Bearing the Grand Ducal Monogram on the uniform is regulated by regulation. For the army, this is set in the « Règlement Grand-Ducal du 10 Janvier 2024 Déterminant Les Emblèmes et Uniformes de l’Armée ». There it says: « The composition, the conditions for wearing the uniforms, the Skh monogram of the Grand Duke (…) are determined by the head of the general staff of the army. »

According to Maison du Grand-DUC, an extensive presentation of the monogram is to take place in September.
