Friends fear to land on a black list

Kristján Gunnarsson, a student in economics at Harvard University, says little more is discussed these days than Donald Trump’s US presidential advantage to the school. About $ 2.2 billion, or about ISK 280 billion, a contribution to the school has been frozen, and the president has threatened that the work permit, which the school is authorized to grant to students, be withdrawn.

Kristján himself is in the final year of the program and plans to work in Iceland after completing his studies. He tells many of his friends with each other with his future. They are Europeans and Indians and have received job offers in the United States after completing their studies, but at this time they do not know whether they will be allowed to stay in the country when it comes.

Don’t know if the job offers stand

« Trump has already threatened to take the right of Harvard to distribute residency licenses, so students do not know if the job offers are standing or what will happen after graduation. This uncertainty goes very badly in people, » says Kristján.

Harvard began a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s decision to freeze funds to the school. The board has also had corners in the Elite School page such as Brown, Columbia and Princeton. Until yesterday, however, Harvard was the only one who sponsored. Now, however, the schools have issued a joint statement in which an attack on the freedom of the schools is objected.

Kristján says mostly have focused on the study when the centuries protest against Israel’s actions rose at the highest in the US campus last fall. He says, however, that it was not avoided to monitor when the last spring was. Trump has said Jewish spirit has been there in the campus. Kristján, however, does not recognize it.

Little been in the debate

« There was a lot of heat in the area. Students were camping in the campus to draw attention to the matter. Harvard has done well since this was and provided students with certain areas to protest or talk about things.

Have tried to support my innermost circle

He says, however, that international students have in recent days objected to Trump’s actions against the school.

« There have been group protests where people fear their future. I have not directly participated in this but am in the area and will witness what is happening. However, I have been involved in the discussion as many of my companions are uncertain as to whether they can work or get to graduate.

Discharge possibly at risk

He says the Trump government’s actions do not have a direct impact on his plans in any way other than that he does not know if he will be able to graduate.

« It just has to be revealed, » says Kristján devoted.

« Certainly, it is a relief for me to know that the job in Iceland is not in danger. This is the most difficult for people who do not have as much prosperity as Icelanders. There are people who have seen the United States as an opportunity for a better life, » says Kristján.

Authorities with a list of students

Kristján says that some of his friends have requested that their nationality will not be disclosed in the interview. It is symbolic of the fears that students experience, as there are examples of students and protesters being expelled from the country by no means or small occasions.

« Authorities have been trying to get a certain list of students who have been opposed to Trump’s policy or values, » says Kristján.

Experiences no Jewish spirit

Have you been with some Jewish spirit or that a call or call has been made of people of that origin?

« You have not been involved in violence or hatred against the Jews. But people have been dissatisfied with the situation in Palestine and it has probably not been convenient to be from Israel or of this origin when the heat was greatest. The pain that is going on in Gaza is my experience, ”says Kristján.
