French teaching assistant stabbed to death by minor student during bag control
A 31-year-old teaching assistant was stabbed to death in the east of France on Tuesday morning by a student. It happened during a bag check by the police in a high school in the Eastern French city. The woman was stabbed several times with a knife. According to French media, the suspect, who was arrested by the police shortly after the stabbing, was fourteen years old and he was not known to the police so far.
That the incident in Nogent took place during a bag check is striking. This type of police checks have only been permitted since March this year, based on the idea that this can be reduced the number of stab incidents in France.
French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a minute of silence in parliament as a result of the incident and speaks in a message on X of ‘a meaningless wave of violence’. The violence in schools receives a lot of political attention in France.
More measures
François Bayrou, the Prime Minister of France, said earlier that there is « endemic violence among some young people. » At the end of April a student died and three others were injured during a stabbing in Nantes. In 2023 a teacher was stabbed to death in the northern French city of Arras. March this year a 17-year-old boy died in a fight in a high school in the province of Essonne.
A day after the fatal incident at the school in Nantes, the Ministry of National Education reported that there had been random checks of bags in schools since March 958, with 94 stabbing weapons being seized, writes news channel BFM TV.
After incidents, the call for more measures always sounds from the French politics. Prime Minister Bayrou said earlier that violence forces French society to « ask fundamental questions about education and the hierarchy of values and respect for human life. »
