French government defends more serious penalties after new disorders in Paris
French Justice Minister regretted on Tuesday that the penalties imposed on some of those detained by the serious disorders in Paris after the Champions League PSG will “no longer be proportional to the violence” that the country is experiencing.
« Some of the sentences, particularly (in relation) to acts against the police and the destruction of property, are no longer proportional to the violence that our country is facing, » said Gérald Darmanin, in a message on the X social network.
As such, Darmanin argued that « the law should change radically, » giving an example of the abolition of suspended penalties, in particular those that were imposed on some of the detainees who were tried on Monday by the « serious public order incidents » and « repeated disorders ».
The minister argued that the judges – in which they expressed their full confidence – must have the tools necessary to be able, « under difficult circumstances, » judging these events « firmly and simply. »
According to Agência Lusa, among the proposals submitted by the minister is a minimum penalty of three months in prison (to be effectively fulfilling) for any aggression to a state representative, or a very high fine for the destruction of public space, once the defendant’s fault is recognized.
« These proposals, which we must implement quickly, guarantee the independence of the judges, which we must all protect, and the essential firmness and sense desired by our fellow citizens, » concluded the head of the Justice Folder in France.
Almost 80 people were detained on Sunday in Paris during the celebrations of the PSG Champions League winning, who were still marked by the deaths of a 17 -year -old, stabbed in Dax, and a 20 -year -old person in Paris.
