Francken wants three times as many reservists
In November the Belgian eighteen year olds will receive a letter with the choice to follow a voluntary military service. Five hundred young people are selected in the first year, afterwards a thousand young people get the choice. In exchange, they receive an income of two thousand euros per month.
Anyone who leaves after the military service can be called for another ten years. This means that they make themselves available to the army a few days a year and serve as a backup for active soldiers if a conflict broke out.
Second Army Brigade
In addition, Francken wants to set up this legislature a second army brigade. A « light brigade », which will not drive around with armored cars, but will move on foot. It is a question from NATO that our country meets.
Belgium currently has one army brigade with a command center in Marche-en-Famenne. The second brigade will have a command center in Leopoldsburg, says Francken.
