Francis’ death is completely different from John Paul II. Comments the director
The performance « Death of John Paul II » premiered in February 2022 and at first aroused considerable controversy. John Paul II in Poland is a sanctity that should not be tied. Meanwhile, Jakub Skrzywanek showed him at a very intimate moment of dying. He did not spare the vivid shots of the Pope choking on food. He even showed him naked while changing the pampers or preparing the corpse for the last farewell. However, the director explained in an interview with « Fakt » that art is not controversial in this respect.
– It wasn’t my idea for the spectacle to be controversial. And after a week of playing, these controversies turned into a coherent narrative, in which this spectacle was appreciated. The message was very important to us. We wanted to make a spectacle in which we face the topic of death – Jakub Skrzywanek told « Fakt ». Art eventually won prestigious awards, including Konrad’s laurel for directing at the National Festival of Directing Art, interpretations 2022 and the award at the International Theater Festival of the Divine Comedy for outstanding acting and original approach to the topic.
Director Jakub Skrzywanek was a teenager when the Polish pope was dying. Already then he pointed out that the Holy Father was forced to say something and he couldn’t. « He was stewing before our eyes, » he said after years of the boxes.
On the last day Francis also showed himself to the world. On his face he could see that he was suffering. He managed to speak to the faithful only one sentence. On one of the photos he looked even as if he had tried. Then he got into Papamobile and went to the faithful. Many people associated these moments with the death of John Paul II. These associations still gained strength when information about the death of the Pope arrived on Easter Monday. However, these are just appearances. In fact, these deaths were completely different. Director Jakub Skrzywanek pays attention to this in an interview with « Fakt ». What does he see the difference in?

The artist emphasizes that the difference is very clear and it is absolutely impossible to compare the departure of John Paul II to the death of Pope Francis.
In fact, I would even compare these two deaths on two opposing poles. This one is very intimate, human and non -media, and that it was suffering. Franciszek wanted such an intimate death
– says Jakub Skrzywanek in an interview with « Fakt ».
He points out that in the case of the Polish Pope « everything was in view ». – For about a week we witnessed his great suffering – adds the director. He emphasizes that it was died from dignity. And it was this thread that touched in its loud performance. – We didn’t get into any scandal or controversy issues here, because for me these are media concepts. We wanted to make a spectacle, an artistic creation in which we face the topic of death and I think that we did it very well – he said.
I would not dare to do this performance about anyone else. For a simple reason: never in the history of our society, but also globally, has not been documented in such a way to die anyone in such a very media and open way. And it was somehow fundamental for me. In fact, today there is some social analysis that there are two fundamental deaths. The first is the death of President Kennedy, and the second was this weekly period of showing us the agony of John Paul II, in which in my opinion this decision violated some such elements strictly related to ethicality

The death of Pope Francis differently than John Paul II
– I was very wondering how viewers react to it, but fortunately I managed to produce a spectacle enough universal, in which really this John Paul II and all this Vatican is a kind of background to a very universal and human story about dying and illness. And I think that as part of this he is somehow fundamental and most important – the director assessed.
Now we are witnessing a completely different departure. Francis could not become a hero of such a performance. He repeatedly emphasized that he cares about modest burial. Not everything that happens around his death is in line with his will and innate modesty. It is worth considering it.
