Fourteen killed under landslide in Indonesia, 11 are missing
The death toll from landslides in a limestone quarry in the Indonesian province of West Java rose to 14 today, while emergency teams continued to look for at least 11 more workers still missing under the rubble, police said.
The landslide happened yesterday morning in a quarry in the Ulibon area, about 200 kilometers east of Jakarta.
The Gunung Kuda mining was active when part of the hill crashed, burying heavy machinery, trucks and dozens of workers.
« Eleven people are still taking place, and were reported by their families and colleagues, who confirmed that they were working on the site when the incident took place, » said Dady Setia, a head of police in West Java.
« Their location remains a top priority for our search and rescue teams, » he added.
Operations were temporarily suspended last night at sunset and continued early this morning.
Joint rescue efforts include staff from the National Search and Rescue Agency, police, military, local disaster officials and volunteers.
It is believed that at least three excavators and six trucks are buried under the landslide, making it difficult to access the deeper layers of rubble.
