Four generations on YouTube

Janus Bragi Birgisson, director of the film Paradise The Amateur, received the jury award at the Documentary Festival Skjaldborg this year.

In lighting The film says that it deals with the self -portraits of four people on YouTube, each of their generation. They have in common to have shared their lives on YouTube.

Janus Bragi talked to a journalist mbl.is.

Asked about how Janus came to know the said men, he says the Greek has led himself.

« I have been working on filmmaking for a long time and have worked a lot as a cutter and love to grab in raw materials, a material that is uncomfortable or a little worked and the public creates.

He says he started the road when he lived with his wife Tinna Ottesen, who produces the film, in Brussels. There he says she has been studying, but he has sought prisoners on YouTube for a while.

« Then you start looking for weddings, funerals or Christmas, for example. So you find some channel and think: » Yes, he or she has posted a lot. Okay, I’m going to look at the channel better on youtube, « says Janus.

Subsequently, Janus says he has begun to show Tinna and friends and family the material he found inside.

« People find this fun. I get so Loja Höskuldsson with me and we start standing for show evenings, first here at Skjaldborg and then in Mengi and in more places, where Loji played music under, » says Janus but Loji Höskuldsson also took care of the music in the Paradise of Amateur.

The show evenings were held under the name Snitsel several times.

« This is how it becomes such » performance lectures « and from them there is some story of self-portraits where certain questions arise. And all this is from people who are formed themselves and their lives. How is Iceland? How do we behave? And how is our life? From there, the idea that I could possibly start creating a picture of this came to light,  » says Janus.

Isn’t it difficult to work with people’s personal content?

« Sure, it’s hard and complicated, but all these people are releasing youtube so they were all very open to allowing us to use the content when I contact it, ”says Janus.

In the film, he interviews the four civilians while following them in daily life as well as using their YouTube videos.

He says that couple have been given a lawyer to do Contracts with the owners of the YouTube channel before taking shooting with them.

« It is not done to lock people somehow inside, but contracts are often a very good way to have conversations about what is going to happen, » says Janus.

He says the people in the film have taken good care of what he has shown them.

A massive amount of content did not rattled in the picture

« It is difficult to make a documentary is that you start and set off and find something absolutely great, but when you have to start making a picture of it, movies usually have to have some one thought, some line that is laid and you follow and look after, »

He says so and that he has, among other things, gone into important shoots, On the one hand, at Akranes with a singing group that calls itself the girls and on the other in Borgarnes to form a man, Rikka Mýrdal, who sits up with his father’s video library. Janus, however, says the result is to focus on the four men the film is about.

Home of Icelandic documentaries

Janus took care of the planning of the Skjaldborg Festival for two years a decade ago with his wife Tinna and the producer of the film.

Asked why he decided to premiere the film at Skjaldborg in Patreksfjörður, Janus says the festival is « home of Icelandic documentaries ».

« Those who are interested in and make documentaries in Iceland come together here. The movie theater is awesome and the people who stand at the festival, whether it is from Patreksfjordur or from town, are concerned that it is done well with documentaries that otherwise do not reach the public’s ears.

As to where the film will be shown following the festival, he says it will be shown in Bíuparadís this fall and later on the state television.
