Former Prime Minister Alexander De Croo candidate for UN top function
Former Prime Minister Alexander De Croo is a candidate to become director of the VN Development Program (UNDP). He enjoys the support of the Belgian government.
Alexander De Croo (Open VLD) has a great opportunity to become UNDP’s director, the UN development program. Achim Steiner, the current director, leaves after six years. De Croo was requested by people within the organization to make its candidacy. He enjoys the support of Prime Minister Bart De Wever (N-VA) and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prévot, with whom everything has been consulted. De Croo is currently mayor of Brakel and Federal Member of Parliament.
Three counter candidates
It is an absolute top job within the UN: the pecking order is the third function. Now that the US is deducting their hands from USAID and the UN organizations, the organization is looking for a new director with a political profile and a solid network. As a former prime minister, former Minister of Development Cooperation and former Minister of Finance, De Croo has good papers. He also knows current UN Secretary General Antonio Guternres well.
Yet it is not yet running course. There are certainly three counter candidates, but they rather come from the UN official apparatus. The UNDP is located in New York and provides developing countries with advice and support to combat poverty.
