Former D66 leader Alexander Pechtold nominated as mayor of Delft
Former D66 leader Alexander Pechtold will be the new mayor of Delft. The Delft city council decided on Thursday evening in a council meeting recommend him to the outgoing cabinet. After approval by the Council of Ministers and a Royal Decree, he will be sworn in at the beginning of September as the successor to current mayor Marja van Bijsterveldt.
According to the confidential committee born in Delft, is, who pushed him forward, « an experienced and knowledgeable director who can connect with people with jeu and humor and can further strengthen the position of Delft in the region and further ». He is now general director of the CBR.

Administrative experience
The 59-year-old Pechtold was before he entered the national politics first municipal councilor and alderman in Leiden before becoming mayor of Wageningen from 2003 to 2005. From 2005 to 2006, he was Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the Balkenende II cabinet and from 2006 to 2018 D66 party leader in the Lower House.
