Foreigners are not allowed to study in Harvard
The US government wants to prevent the Harvard elite university from accepting international students. Minister of Homeland Protection Kristi NoEM had taken the appropriate steps, her ministry said in Washington. In the future, the university should no longer accept new students from abroad as part of a special federal program, the statement said. Students from abroad already registered would have to register at other universities – otherwise they will lose their residence status in the USA.
In order for educational institutions to accept international students in the United States, they need special certification as part of a federal program that is managed by the Ministry of Homeland. The Harvard Ministry wants to withdraw this certification. It is unclear whether and to what extent the withdrawal will have legally existed.
Dispute over political orientation
The measure is part of a persistent conflict between the government of US President Donald Trump and universities, to which it accuses of left-liberal orientation. Unlike other universities, Harvard opposes far -reaching political guidelines from Washington – for example to admission procedures, diversity programs and personnel decisions. The university is legal against it.
In the course of the dispute, the government of the elite university in Massachusett’s state has already deleted or frozen funding. Among other things, it was said that Harvard was not decisive enough against anti -Semitism on campus. In view of the financial incisions, Harvard President Alan Garber had recently announced that he would do without a quarter of his salary.
The power of the old
For many US universities, the income of international students is an important part of the budget-also because they often pay significantly higher tuition fees than domestic students.
