Foreign prisoners increase while Icelandic decreases
Both the number and the proportion of foreign nationals who serve the judgment in Iceland have doubled from 2020, while Icelanders who are served are declining. Opposition MPs propose a dashboard to see how immigration groups are adapting in Iceland.
Foreign prisoners in detention or detention have increased in the years 2020-2024 from 27 to 59. During the same period, Icelandic prisoners have decreased by one-fifth, from 100 to 80.
This is stated in response Thorbjörg Sigríður Gunnlaugsdóttir, Minister of Justice, with the inquiry of Diljár Mistar Einarsdóttir, MP for the Independence Party.
« I think this is just striking, » says Diljá Mist in a conversation with mbl.is, who, however, says he cannot indicate a detailed explanation for this increase, but has its speculation.
However, she points out that she has submitted a parliamentary issue that could help explain this increase.
Proposes a dashboard
The parliamentary issue is about establishing a dashboard for a Nordic model that can give an overview of the main scales to monitor and evaluate the performance of immigration integration into Icelandic society.
This is the second time she submits this, but she recently submitted the case in September 2024, one and a half months before the government of Bjarni Benediktsson exploded.
She says the parliamentary language is a Nordic model. « (On dashboards in neighboring countries), you can see what each immigration group adapts to society, » says Diljá, « among other things with regard to punishment. »
The MP points out that on the Danish Adaptation Center (Integrationsbarometer) It can be seen that certain groups of immigrants break up.
« I suppose the same thing is up to the cube here, » she says, but according to the Danish dashboard, there are immigrants from Menapt countries (Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan) that usually break.
