For the Latvian Annual Coin 2024 becomes Coast Cabbage / Day
Bank of Latvia and the portal Delfi.lv In a public survey organized, everyone from March 24 to April 6 had the opportunity to vote for the most outstanding coin released in 2024. This year the survey received nearly 27 thousand votes, and the coin Cabbage got nearly 7,000 votes.

The cabbage has taken an important place in our everyday life and in the kitchen. It is believed that the cabbage in the territory of Latvia was acquainted with around 11-13. century, and they became one of the main vegetables in our ancestors’ cuisine.
In ancient Greece and Rome, cabbage was considered a healing and otherwise valuable plant. Cabbage leaves are also used in folk medicine, applying them to the sick part of the body.
Due to the green leaves, the cabbage is associated with the green color of the banknote, and we sometimes use the word « cabbage » when talking about money, including wealth. It was believed that eating cabbage increases fertility, and it is in line with the myth that children are found or children are born in cabbage.
Cabbage eating and giving is also related to different beliefs – Latvians on Anna Day (July 26) gave up on each other with cabbage leaves, believing that it would increase wealth. On New Year’s Eve, Latvians traditionally eat sauerkraut so that the « acidity » or failures experienced during the year are eaten without a trace.

The Bank of Latvia has released 98 lats and 58 euro coins since 1993. In total, more than 50 Latvian and one Ukrainian artist participated in the creation of Latvian coins.
