With three athletes, Latvia is represented at the World Championship (PC) figure skating in Boston, USA. On Wednesday there was a short program competition for women and couples. On Thursday at 5:05 pm Latvian time will begin a short program competition for men. They will start the main hope for Dennis Vasilyev and Fedir Kulish. The only representative of Latvia in the ladies’ competition, Dary Stepchenko, fell and earned only 45.93 points in the short program. At that time it was 11. The result was still to start 19 figure skaters. Hope to qualify for the selection program that will compete in the top 24 had practically lost. The short program competition ended late in the evening Latvian time. Stepchenko did not start at the European Championship (EC) in Tallinn at the end of January, as he lost to Anastasia Kong in the Latvian Championship in December, 50.93 against 52.81 points, respectively. 2024 PC Montreal Darya took 31st place, while in 2023, his debut in PC qualified for the selection program, reaching 23.
Latvia’s leading figure skater Denis Vasilyev, who is 25 years old, will start for the ninth time in the PC. A year ago, he took 7th position in the scoreboard, but won the highest place in PC in 2018, when he was sixth. After Ech in Tallinn, Denis has a feeling of disappointment, as he had only 12 points in the short program after an unfulfilled quad jump.
For another Latvian representative Fedir Kulish (20 years), the primary task of the PC will qualify for the selection program. Ech Kulish took 14th place. Both Latvian figure skaters will also fight for the Olympic road signs. In order to get two start places, Vasilyev and Kulisa’s individual place numbers must not exceed the number 28. For example, one may be 7. And the other in 21st place. The last quotas will be available in September competition in China.
