For campsmobiles, rest areas leave a lot to be desired

According to a ADAC survey, many campers struggle with the comfort on rest areas on German long -distance streets. The biggest criticism is the parking spaces. In the survey of the auto club, 53 percent of specially designated areas want to park their motorhomes, camping buses or caravans.

According to the ADAC, the ADAC was actually lacking: in 2023 and 2024 the auto club had checked a total of 80 rest areas – only every fourth had its own parking spaces for campers or teams.

Around 40 percent of those surveyed want additional services, such as the possibility of emptying a cassette toilet or refilling fresh water. According to the ADAC, there was none of these two services on the facilities tested for the rest stop test.

Security is also important for travelers. Around 45 percent would pay a fee to be able to spend the night at a fenced rest area with video surveillance. Almost 31 percent would even leave up to ten kilometers from the highway for such an offer.

According to the ADAC, 1,003 adults were interviewed for the survey now published, who have made a camping holiday with a motorhome, camping bus or caravan with at least two overnight stays since 2022. Accordingly, 740 have hit and used at least one managed freeway rastan system in the past three years.

Worse compared to foreign rest stops

The survey also shows that Germany cuts worse than the southern neighboring countries with international experience. On a scale of 0 to 100, they only gave German rest areas on average one score of 50, while Austria 69 and Switzerland got 79 points.

More cleanliness, better equipment and a more relaxing ambience were particularly valued there, according to the ADAC in the message for the survey.
