Footballer killed by cancer at 36
Former English footballer Joe Thompson died at the age of 36 after a long -shaped battle, the fifth -league English Club Rocdale announced on Friday, Reuters reports.
Rocdale announced that Thompson died in his home, with his family. He had been diagnosed with the fourth lymphoma, for the third time in April last year, five years since he had retired from professional football.
This form of blood cancer had reached the lungs after exceeding the disease twice during his career. The player born at Bath started and ended his career at Rocdale, with three separate periods in which he played for the club.
« I met Joe first as a talented footballer, but soon we started to adore his affective, overwhelming personality, » the Rochadale club said in a statement.
« He faced every battle with his head up, both on the ground and outside. His journey and his unpolished spirit represented an inspiration to anyone who was moved by his story. Our thoughts are heading with Joe’s family and friends at these incredibly sad times, » according to the Rochadale club.
Joe Thompson was formed at Manchester United Academy, where he joined at the age of nine, before playing for Rochadale, Rovers and Carlisle United.
« A man who perfectly illustrated the values of our club … a warm personality, who had a deep connection with our club from a young age. Our thoughts are heading to Joe’s family and his friends during this difficult period, » said Manchester United Club.
