« Flying plate » on the roof of the maritime museum

The workers of the company GNU have placed a round copper (and wooden) dome of pagodant shape yesterday at the Gabrielli Palace, where the Maritime Museum has been operating for 71 years. At the end of July 1944, the Allies bombed Piran for the third time, nine townspeople died, several buildings were broken, including the then tin dome on the Rotonda of the Palace, built in classicist style between 1849 and 1851 following the example of the Rotond Pancera Palace. The latter was planned by architect Matteo Pertsch.

After the bombing, the top of the Rotonda was only concreted and repeatedly tried in vain to prevent shutdown. Some time ago, the conservation plan was entrusted to GNom, which is an order from the Master of Roof, Andrej Šušteršič from Logatec. The dome is five meters in diameter, 2.5 meters high and two tonnes heavy. It was reconstructed by image material and measurements of wooden (oak) frame and copper sheet. At five o’clock in the morning, they partially closed traffic into the city and accurately placed a similar roof with an elevator and screwed on the prepared round circumference of Rotenda.

The municipality spent € 55,000 for the new roof of the Museum Palace. Jože Drešar from Gnom says it will prevent the shimmer from giving the shiny copper soon and that the roof of the famous Piran baptist is reminiscent of the roof. The old town, with such architectural interventions, is increasingly shining.
