Flooded over the road in high water growth

There were large water growth in several rivers and rivers in the north of Iceland yesterday and flooded the road in Bardardalur.

In the tomb of the Icelandic Meteorological Office you can see how water flows in several rivers in the north of the country greatly increase last night. The flow increased most in Skjálfandafljót, where water flow went up to 800 cubic meters per second when the most. The day before, the flow had been about 160 meters per second.

Likewise, there were large water growth in the Austari-Jökulsá river and Héraðsvötn in Skagafjörður.

Ingibjörg Andrea Bergþórsdóttir, a naturalist specialist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, says that this great water growth can be attributed to solutions, but there has been a lot of warmth in the Northeast in recent days.

To the left you can see how Aldeyjarfoss looked last night. To the right you can see how the waterfall looks in the normal season and the flow in Skjálfandafljót is less.

More than the last years

« This is linked to the rainfall that has been the last few days and the warmth to the north. In itself, this is related to this traditional spring solubility, but it became a bit there in Skjálfandafljót in particular. Conditions cause it to melt a lot of snow and fights in the rivers in this area. »

Ingibjörg adds that the flow has peaked around midnight yesterday and that now the rivers are declining.

« This is going down now and it looks like it will cool down, so we expect this to be recovering over the next few days. »

Asked if there is only regular solutions, Ingibjörg says: « Spring solutions are very natural and happen annually, but this was perhaps more than we have seen in recent years, especially in Skjálfandafljót and Austari-Jökulsá. »

Flooded over to three places

Civil defense and emergency responders in the area were alerted to the situation last night, but water from Skjálfandafljót floated over the road in Bárðardalur.

« It flooded and flowed across the road south of the Sanda fragments, in the eastern part of Bárðardalur, » says Jón Ingólfsson, chief engineer at the Road Administration in Húsavík, adding that now that the flow is going down, the Road Administration is likely to go and carry out maintenance on the road.

« We were there last night, it flooded east across the road in the sands and then flowed along it east and over back again. (…) It runs east over him in one place and back to two. »

Fortunately, few travelers on the process

Will need a lot of maintenance?

« Yes, we will have to run a lot in it. (…) We do not go into this right away while there is so much water on the move but as soon as it starts to shake this, we try to do something. «

Finally, Ingi says that fortunately the road is not much going on during this time of year.

« He has gone a lot in the summer when the tourists come, but fortunately there is little about tourists during this time of year. This is the locals who are going the road and it knows this and knows what it is to do. »
