The prisoner who violently raped a social assistant in the Antwerp prison last year has been sentenced to five years of effective prison. He must also pay the victim a (provisional) compensation of 5,000 euros.

It was at the beginning of September 2024 that the facts took place in a conversation room in the cell part of the Antwerp prison. A social assistant from the Psycho-Social Service (PSD) had an appointment with detained Younes E. (25) from Morocco that day. During the conversation, the man suddenly grabbed the social assistant. He tried to kiss her, squeezed her breasts hard and touched her above her clothing on the buttocks and vagina.

Although the process was only about the role of Younes E., the shadow of the government failure hung over the courtroom. At the time of the facts, E. was imposed a security measure after previous aggression cases in prison. The victim was not informed of this. The alarm button in the conversation room turned out not to work, and the alarm on her Walkietalkie did not work as the woman had expected. It was because she started saying that a jailer heard it.

Because he had also closed the door of the room, the man was prosecuted for attacking sexual integrity and rape with imprisonment. The prosecutor demanded a prison sentence of four years and a deprivation from law. The judge did not think this was sufficient and decided to give a year more than requested. Younes E. must also pay the victim a (provisional) compensation of 5,000 euros.
