Five years after Brexit, UK and European Union restart relations
Five years after Brexit, the UK and the European Union are restarting relations. Today’s London summit has reached three agreements – to strengthen defense co -operation, facilitate food trade and facilitate food trade and border checks.
The Security and Defense Partnership Agreement provides for a strengthening of co-operation and could allow the British military industry to participate in a joint EU loan program to buy a 150 billion-euro weapon, which is still negotiated by EU member states.
The agreement is important because of the war that Russia started in Ukraine and the risk of the United States withdrawing from Europe’s defense.
The second agreement is to reduce food controls and agricultural products, which will allow British companies to avoid EU taxes on carbon.
According to London, these measures should bring nearly nine billion pounds of the British economy by 2040.
The third agreement concerns the extension of 12 years of EU fishing ships permission to be able to hunt in British waters.
British Prime Minister Kir Starmer, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa also participated in today’s summit in London.
Starmer estimated that EU agreements would reduce bureaucracy and encourage the UK economy.
– It’s time to look forward. Let’s put aside old debates and political battles and find reasonable, practical solutions that are best for the British people – said Starmer after the first UK – EU summit in London.
Britain after Brexit declined EU exports by 21 percent.
– This is the first summit between the UK and the EU. Denotes a new era in our relationship and we all benefit – says Starmer.
While a message to Leyen with the agreements reached between Brussels and London is sent a message that countries in Europe are supporting and assisting with each other.
The message we send to the world today is that in a time of global instability and when our continent faces the biggest threat to generations, we in Europe support and help each other, Leyen said.
