First Icelanders to hold such a high office


Almar Ögmundsson was elected one of the three Vice Presidents of the European Boxing Association in the days. This is a major turning point in Iceland’s international co -operation in the field of boxing, but this is the first time that Iceland has held such a high office within the European Boxing Association.

Almar has been active in the development and development of boxing in Iceland and Europe in recent years. He was chairman of the Boxing Association in the years 2020-2022 but has reportedly been more behind the scenes for the past two years.

In his new role in the Commission, he will have direct access to policy making and decision -making on the future of boxing in Europe.

Corruption in the International Football Association

In a conversation with mbl.is, Almar says corruption in the International Federation Association has meant that boxing was thrown out of the Olympic Union.

« In fact, there was a risk that boxing would be thrown out of the Olympic Union, but it was always given a certain chance, to change the control for example.

Following that, he says a lot of work has been put into establishing a new International Boxing Association, which was made in 2023. Over two weeks ago, it was then confirmed that boxing would be part of the Ompics in LA 2028.

« Part of establishing a new international association is to establish a European division, Asian division and other aluminum divisions, » Almar adds.

Representatives of 23 countries gathered in Prague

The Czech Boxing Association and the city of Prague convened the first general meeting of the newly formed European Boxing Association, where 23 countries’ representatives met and confirmed the formal establishment of the Union.

Iceland had two representatives at the meeting, then Almar Ögmundsson and Jón Birki Lúðvíksson.

The Commission’s election took place at the meeting and Lars Brovil from Denmark was elected the first president of the Union.

This marks the beginning of a new policy and increased consultation within European boxing.

« You don’t do it every day »

How did it happen that you offered yourself?

« I have been in this for the past few years and been in good contact with people abroad. The person who was leading this work, starting this relationship, is from Denmark and he contacted me and asked if I could assist the board. Subsequently, I considered it appropriate to present myself in the first formal board. »

How is the feeling, being elected the first Icelander in such a high position internationally?

« It’s just exciting. A lot of work but a very fun project to build such a new international relationship from the ground up, you don’t do it every day, » Almar replies. When asked, he adds that a new position will follow some travel.

« This will clearly follow some trips, some meetings and tournaments and such that need to be monitored, but this is all just the volunteer work of those on the board. »

Are you competing yourself?

« It’s been a little bit since I last competed. I didn’t compete for only 10 times, so I was studying and another. This is a good way to stay in this environment without going into the ring. »

Focus on solidarity and cooperation

Lars Brovil from Denmark was elected president of the Union. In addition to Almar, Marketa Haindlova from the Czech Republic and Len Huard from the Netherlands were elected vice presidents.

Co -directors are Nicolina Juric from Croatia, Kirsi Korpaeus from Finland, Istvan Kovacs of Hungary and Mouloud Bouziane from France.

Then Dr. David McDonagh from Norway elected chairman of the Medical and Drug Administration Committee, Martin Volke from Germany Chairman of the Sports and Competition Committee and Enrico Apa from Italy from the judges and ruling committee.

Lars Brovil, the newly elected president of the Union, emphasized in his address at the meeting on the importance of solidarity and cooperation within Europe, and that the new relationship is an important part of the expanding World Boxing family.

The European Boxing Association aims to work closely with World Boxing, national associations, Olympic committees and other aluminum organizations to ensure transparency, good government, athletes’ development and sustainable financial management.
