Vilvoorde

A fierce industrial break at container company Maes in the Jan Frans Willemsstraat caused considerable unrest in Vilvoorde and the surrounding municipalities in the night from Friday to Saturday. Shortly after midnight a fire broke out in a lot of construction waste on the business park. The fire was accompanied by an impressive smoke development that could be smelled as far as Grimbergen, Zemst and even parts of Meise.

The fire brigade pulled out en masse and quickly switched to a large -scale bet. Fire brigade zone Vlaams-Brabant West received reinforcement from the Brussel Brussels, Fire Zone Rivierenland and Flemish Brabant East. The civil protection from Crisnée, the police and city services of Vilvoorde also arrived.

« The fire brigade intervention plan was immediately activated and the operational coordination announced, » said the emergency services. « Our teams are still busy with extinguishing. That will take some time. With the help of bulldozers, the smoldering waste is pulled apart to extinguish hotspots. »

The plume of smoke was visible and smells in the wider area. A be-alert was sent to warn residents. Many residents from Grimbergen, Zemst, Vilvoorde and Meise reported that they woke up with a penetrating fire smell in the house. The city called on to keep windows and doors closed and to switch off ventilation systems.

According to firefighter Wouter Jeanfils from the Vlaams-Brabant West zone, the flamed waste has quickly developed into a major fire, « he says. » Our teams went to the spot with a lot of water and were able to bring the situation under control thanks to the use of large water transport. With that we were able to pump water from the nearby side arm of the Sea Canal. «

Fortunately, the fire did not cause any injuries. According to Jeanfils, the damage is limited. « There is no building involved, although there may be slight damage to covered structures. » Everything points to spontaneous ignition for the time being, possibly due to heat, chemical reactions, a battery or even a gas bottle.

No water sports

For those in the area, according to the fire brigade, there is no reason to panic. « Our measuring teams have checked the air quality on the spot. The measured values are well below the health limit, so there is no danger to the population, » said Jeanfils.

More than fifty firefighters were active all night. Even today, different teams remain on site. In the meantime, the sports service of Stad Vilvoorde decided to temporarily stop all water sports activities on the Darse due to smoke.

The Nablus works will take a few hours.(DBG)
