Finns returned the record number of bottles and cans

The number of returned beverage packaging increased by up to 130 million from 2023 refunds.

In 2024, about 2.33 billion beverage packaging was returned. Most of the cans were restored, which were made in circulation of more than 1.5 billion copies.

About 700 million plastic bottles were returned and 130 million glass bottles.

On average, every Finn returned about 420 drinking packages through the Palpa system last year. This means an average of EUR 64 per Finn in deposit money.

Most Bottles and cans were restored in Lapland. There, 527 packages were returned per capita. Lapland has previously led statistics on bottle return.

In the Åland Islands, the amount of return per capita is the lowest in all provinces, 305 per inhabitant.

The most busy recovery communities were Utsjoki, Kittilä and Inari.

Palpa's leader Tommi Vihavainen states in the release that especially in cottage municipalities and tourist centers, bottles and cans are used to restore the bottles and cans.

At the provincial level, the most diligent returnees are not found in the big cities in the area but in small municipalities. Uusimaa's recovery peak is in Hanko, Pirkkala in Pirkanmaa, Kustavi of Southwest Finland and in Joutsa, Central Finland.

In the Palpa recycling system, new bottles and cans are made of bottles and cans.
