The coin that was hiding in the darkness of the closet was first considered insignificant, but the woman nevertheless chose to take it to an expert.
Here it quickly emerged that the coin originated from the beginning of the 18th century and was one of just about 20 marked by Royal Mint to mark a British victory over Spain in 1702.
The rare gold coin carries a portrait of Queen Anne and was made from treasures that the British had seized from Spanish ships.
« At first I didn’t expect much. For usually the coins found are not very valuable. But when I checked it, I found out that this coin was very special, » says auction holder Leslie Gillham of Gorings, who assessed the coin and could immediately see its historical meaning.
Of the few coins produced, only 15 are believed to be in private hands today, and it makes the finding extra startling.
The widow himself believes that her deceased husband must have intended to pass on the coin as a kind of inheritance to the family, although he never showed interest in coin collection in his lifetime.
The coin must now be at auction and is expected to attract much attention among collectors worldwide. A modest discovery that ended up entering the history books, and in the family’s wealth.
