Finansinspektionen warns of Celebrity’s crypto messages

In less than 24 hours, small savers who go in and support their idols crypto campaigns can be tricked into their savings.

It is called « Rug Pull » and is described as a new type of crypto fraud that can be linked to so -called « meme coins » – a type of cryptocurrency inspired by Internet memes.

« The thing with » Meme Coins « is that basically anyone can create a new cryptocurrency that you name something festive like Moa-Coin, DN-Coin, or » $ Trump « -like President Trump who tried to try to attract investors with a dinner, » says Moa Langemark.

To launch your own « Meme Coins“Has recently become popular, not least in well -known profiles with many followers on social media. The campaigns are often marketed by profiles that use their platforms to get attention, or want to make money by attracting followers to invest.

But in several notable cases, well-known profiles are suspected to have exploited their « Meme Coin » campaigns to deceive followers and small savers for money. It can also be that famous people are exploited by criminals. It is this type of crypto messaging, so -called « Rug Pull » – that has recently appeared on Finansinspektionen’s radar.

– You drive up the value very strongly by pressing via social media, and then you just as quickly pull away the carpet for people by selling when it is on top. The point is that you can make a lot of money from it simply.

A known crypto scandal at the end of last year is linked to an American influencer called « Hawk Tuah ». But also Argentina President Milei, Tech billionaire Elon Musk and presidential couple Donald and Melania Trump have been accused of « Rug Pull » fraud. This after the rapid rise and case for their « meme coins » « $ Trump ».

Moa Langemark, consumer protection economist at Finansinspektionen.

– It’s just to go in and look at what has happened to the value of Trump Coin. It is clear that the course has collapsed sharply very quickly. If you went in and invested at an early stage, you have lost money if you were to sell today. Then if he himself has earned it is unclear, says Moa Langemark.

The charges against the influx « Hawk Tuah’s » noticed « Meme Coin » came after an almost complete collapse. The course raged by about 90 percent from a market capitalization of about $ 500 million. Moa Langemark believes that « RUG Pulls » is in many ways similar to other types of investment fraud and stock manipulations.

– Right now it is about « Rug Pulls » linked to « Meme Coins », but it is really the same mechanisms that we have previously seen with so -called « ponzibedri » or « pump and dump » within the share world or different pyram times where you vigorously drive up the value and then sell by the holding which leads to a collapse.

Argentina President Javier Mileis's crypto scandal created main headlines.

How many people are deceived Through « Rug Pull » is difficult to say because the encryption makes it difficult to track the money to the fraudster, she says:

– There is probably a large dark figure. To deceive people into money is criminal, but the problem is that they have denied that it was about « Rug pull ». It is based on crypto technology that makes it difficult to see through for supervisory authorities and, above all, small savers.

Another problem is that there is no supervision for crypto messages.

– It is not actors who are under our supervision, so we have no mandate to intervene based on the tools we have today.

Finansinspektionen is now included in international cooperation to counteract crypto messages. But it is also required that both the banks and the social media giants act:

– The solution to this must be to work on the issue at international level. Social media has an important responsibility for the marketing and information that is disseminated in their channels, and the banks can develop systems to pay attention to suspected transactions.

Anyone who suspects it has been deceived through « Rug Pull » is urged to report the incident in the same way as other investment fraud.

If it is so difficult to judge the people behind it, why should you report to the police?

– Any fraud that is reported can be an important puzzle piece and one should not rule out that money can come back. Although it is difficult, the little puzzle piece that you yourself contribute can be part of solving the more complex puzzle on a global level, says Langemark.
