War in Ukraine is not an obstacle

The central military cemetery of the Red Army is the largest memorial burial ground in Slovakia, there are more than 17,600 soldiers who fell in the liberation of Czechoslovakia during World War II. A little smaller is a similar cemetery in Zvolen with 17 280 buried.

« This reverent place is also closely linked to a significant historical event in our city; in the cemetery there are also buried soldiers who laid their lives in the liberation of the town of Michalovce 80 years ago, » explained the town hall some time ago the need to repair it.

The city did not see an obstacle in the financial support of the embassy, although Mask It leads aggressive War in Ukraine.

« The funds that are earmarked for the restoration of this reverent place do not constitute political support for a particular government or regime. They were provided for a specific purpose – the restoration of the cemetery – and their use is strictly tied to this commemorative activity, » said Michalovská spokeswoman Mária Stričková.

She added that, regardless of current political circumstances, the restoration and maintenance of military cemeteries is a manifestation of respect for human lives and victims that have been entered in the history of the struggle for freedom and peace.

The question of adopting or not accepting

The historian also pointed to Russian aggression in Ukraine. « The question of whether the city should have been accepted and whether it will not make adjustments at its own expense. Also because Slovakia is on the list of enemy states of the Russian Federation. If Slovakia is an enemy for the Russians, Russia cannot be a friend for the Slovak Republic.

The construction work consisted in the restoration of little visible mass grave fields. As the Town Hall stated at the beginning of the reconstruction, their limitations and markings will emphasize the importance and lifting of this place.
