Feyenoord also wins in Eredivisie at AZ and performs pressure on PSV
Feyenoord continues to do well under trainer Robin van Persie in the Eredivisie. The Rotterdammers booked their fourth consecutive victory at AZ: 0-1. Feyenoord thus strengthened third place and also increased the pressure at number 2 PSV further. Feyenoord has 2 points less than the reigning national champion, who will visit FC Groningen later on Saturday.
The second place gives the right to participate in the main tournament of the Champions League, good for many millions. The number 3 has to qualify for the main schedule of the lucrative club tournament via preliminary rounds.
AZ got the first chances in Alkmaar. In the ninth minute, Troy Parrott came across keeper Timon Wellenreuther. Shortly thereafter, Peer Koopmeiners turned the ball out of a corner kick on the bar.
Most of Feyenoord supporters did not see those moments. In protest, the majority only came up the stands in the twelfth minute. The fans of Feyenoord were angry that they only received 750 tickets for the branch, had to travel with a mandatory bus combination and not allowed to take all banners inside.
Feyenoord came in better in the game as the first half progressed. The Rotterdammers received help from Zico Buurmeester after more than half an hour. The AZ midfielder first did not take back a play ball and then shot up against Ayase Ueda. From the following turn-turning pass by Feyenoord, neighbor headed the ball behind Jeroen Zoet, who replaced the light-shocked goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro.
AZ coach Maarten Martens saw that improvement was not forthcoming in the initial phase of the second half and brought Kees Smit and Ruben van Bommel to the team in the 55th minute. Parrott was close to the equalizer in the 58th minute on a pass from Kristijan Belic, but Wellenreuther could barely save. Anis Hadj Moussa was successful for Feyenoord shortly thereafter, but the goal was rejected because Ueda was offside.
In the final phase, Feyenoord scored again, via Julán Carranza. That goal either did not take place because the striker defender Bruno brought Martins Indi out of balance. The victory of Feyenoord was no longer in danger.
AZ achieved only 3 points from the last five league matches and no longer participates in the battle for third place. The Alkmaarders are sixth and now have 10 points less than Feyenoord.
