The summer holidays are approaching for many Danes, and thus the car trip is also waiting south for thousands of families.

A large part is heading for or through Germany, and here it is important to know the differences in the traffic rules.

German rules differ in several areas from the Danish, and lack of knowledge can quickly lead to fines or dangerous situations.

A good example is the rules of overhaul. Where in Denmark it is as a starting point to overtake the right, there are several cases in Germany where it is actually allowed – even if the car in front of the left lane.

Therefore, it is worthwhile to pay extra attention before rolling out on the German motorways.

It writes the media Inside-Digital.de.

Most motorists are not aware that one has to slip to the right when the highway divides and a wide guideline (sign 340) begins.

Section 7a, par. 1, in the German Road Traffic Act (STVO) gives green light.

When you follow the coherent track, you must run faster than those who choose the outgoing lane.

Traffic jams and snail speed

As the German car association ADAC highlights, you may also want to overtake right when the traffic ends up in long queues.

If the left track keeps completely still, you can legally run up to 20 km/h faster on the right.

But it doesn’t stop here.

Even when the cars in the left track move at a slow pace – exactly up to 60 km/h – it is still perfectly okay to move to the right with a speed difference of up to 20 km/h.

This means that you have to reach up to 80 km/h when the others crawl up with snail speed.

So the next time you hold onto the highway and consider a tempting overhaul right, it is not necessarily the rules that will hold you back.

In Denmark we have three specific situations where it is allowed to overtake the right. You can read more about them in the article below.
