Federal Council wants to extend to two weeks
Volunteer work
More holidays for paths and co.: Federal Council wants to extend youth vacation from one to two weeks
The parliament has spoken out for a doubling of youth vacation for voluntary work. The Federal Council is now complying with this request. And youth centers should also benefit more from this.
The youth holiday should be increased so that there will be enough leaders in paths in the future.
These are basic unpaid holiday weeks that people under the age of 30 can use if, for example, they work in the warehouse management or in other voluntary work in the extracurricular child and youth work. With the doubling, the Federal Council implemented two advances by Maja Riniker (FDP/AG) and Ursula Schneider Schüttel (SP/FR), which Parliament accepted.
« Strengthening volunteering »
The youth holiday “contributes to personal development and social cohesion,” says the Federal Office of Justice. He is « essential for the activity of numerous youth organizations in Switzerland ». Numerous youth associations and sports organizations had also clearly welcomed Parliament’s decision last year. « This decision is an important step in strengthening volunteering, » wrote, for example, the Swiss gymnastics association.
In the future, youth vacation should also be able to be used for further low -threshold offers. In the communication, the area of open child and youth work is mentioned, for example the commitment in the local youth center. Activities in commercial organizations are also expressly excluded.
However, these changes come too late for the thousands of leaders who start the summer camp in a few weeks. Implementation is realistic for 2027 at the earliest.
