Federal Council as a couple therapist? Marc Jost in an interview

The Federal Council as a couple therapist? EVP National Councilor Marc Jost explains why politics should strengthen relationships

« Many are not aware of how valuable stable couple relationships are for society, » says EVP National Councilor Marc Jost. In the interview, the theologian gives tips for sustainable love luck.

About four out of ten marriages fail in Switzerland. Separations don’t just cause emotional pain. For example, single parents with their life situation are generally more dissatisfied than couples and have a higher risk of poverty.

Marc Jost, 51, has now successfully put the topic of couple relationships on the political agenda. The National Council has in the special session postulate Suppose in which the Bernese EPP politician requires an overview of existing prevention measures from the Federal Council.

As an evangelical pastor, Jost accompanied couples on their way to marriage. He made sure that the Bernese civil status offices « How to care for love » The well -known Zurich psychology professor and pair researcher Guy Bodenmann.

Marc Jost, you have been married to your wife Denise for 25 years and have four children aged 14, 16, 18 and 20 years. Are you happy?

Yes. I am happy with marriage and family. However, this does not mean that we do not face challenges in our couple relationship. There are topics, for example in educational issues in which we have different views and have to negotiate consensus.

What do you and your wife do for happiness?

We try to take care of our marriage regularly. For example, by specifically spending time as a couple without children, such as walking or hiking. We also regularly attend marriage coaching. That is very valuable. We collect topics that currently deal with us.

Before marriage, she and your wife did a partner check. Would you advise all couples?

I think this is very useful for all couples who are planning a binding, long -term relationship. Different areas are checked. Which values are important, what are the requirements from the family family, how do you deal with finances, how do you keep it with religion, do you want to start a family, what career plans do you pursue? Occasionally differences can endure a couple relationship. If too many red lamps shine, it will be difficult. I know couples who have separated due to such an analysis and are now happily married to other people.
