FCA trainer Sandro Wagner in portrait: career, family and private
To describe Sandro Wagner? Not a very easy thing. There are many stories and anecdotes about the man who has not put everything, just not ordinary career. For example, that he as a co-commentator at ZDF Had trouble because of a flippant saying. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Germany played against Spain, Wagner was a co-commentator next to ZDF-Mann Oliver Schmidt divided. After the game, the broadcaster reached emails and letters that complained about Wagner. The reason was a saying about a group of Qataris in the fan block: « I thought earlier, the whole curve is full of Germany fans. Then I only noticed that these are the Qatarian bathrobes. » Of course were not bathrobes, but the traditional, long white robes called Thawb. The hype around the bathrobes were a little dragged on what else could be heard from Wagner and which is why he quickly made a career as a TV expert: the 37-year-old manages to talk entertaining and competently like just a few about football. In the past, he shot – see bathrobes – over the destination in places. The 11 friends called him the « street footballer among the experts ».
But it also includes the truth: Wagner has not delivered any verbal slips. This also shows the fact that an episode from 2022 has to serve. Wagner has been in public for some time. As an assistant coach of the national team that he has been since November 2023, there are hardly any quotes or even interviews with him. Especially during the 2024 home European Championship, there were several inquiries to the DFB press office. Wagner had everything canceled, football should be in the foreground – and in the background.
Sandro Wagner in portrait: What is known about his wife and children
At least that with the Wagner in the background will now have an end. The 37-year-old will work as a coach in the Bundesliga. It was a path from the bottom. The player career ended in August 2020 after an episode at the Chinese club TJ Jinmen Tiger. This was followed by a job as a striker trainer in the DFB youth, then from March three months as a U19 coach in Unterhaching, from July 2021 Wagner was a coach of the Unterhaching game association for two years. He led the regional league into the 3rd division at the time, then the chapter was finished. At the Unterhachingen ladder family Schwabl, « The Sandro », which also lives in the small community, is still in the best memory, like Manfred Schwabl recently Kicker said. Wagner is a win for the club and just as much more than just the loudspeaker: « I asked his wife how she can withstand it. From 24 hours a day he is 23 in football. »
His childhood love Denise, with whom Wagner is married, should have enough to do anyway: The couple has four children: daughter Luca-Marie was born in February 2011, the sons Hugo and Bruno 2014 and 2018, daughter Alma 2020.
Wagner obviously did not always have this seriousness. Herrmann Gerland, who trained the young Sandro with the amateurs of FC Bayern, told him Kicker Once on his former player that he lacked the right attitude: « Sandro was ball -safe, but he wasn’t fast and he had his own head, he was difficult. He didn’t take it all seriously as we got it. He never heard on me. » Wagner himself also admitted: « I was not focused. »
Sandro Wagner’s career remained unobtrusive
For a long time it looked like a highly inconspicuous player career. Founded too easily at Bayern early, Wagner first moved to Duisburg, then to Bremen. From there was awarded to Kaiserslautern, where nothing went together and what he described a little later as « huge error ». Then to the Hertha, where the Bundesliga promotion succeeded in 2012/13, but Wagner was mainly used as a joker and only reaches five second division goal. In the following two Bundesliga season, little went together for him. Wagner’s star opened only at the age of 27, after moving to Bundesliga promoted SV Darmstadt 98. Suddenly he brought his body profitably, scored goals, was a regular and perhaps the best Darmstadt player. He also saw that and spoke of himself as « one of the best German strikers ». Perhaps it was even right, but was sometimes considered frowning. Be it. It continued to TSG Hoffenheim, where he was trained by Julian Nagelsmann at the time, and finally to Bayern.
Was with the Munich Wagner the substitute for Robert Lewandowski and finally seemed. Wagner’s ambition seemed to fit Bayern, which he had already cheered as a fan. After the lost DFB Cup final, 2018 against Eintracht Frankfurt, he was also seen that he also shot out here: Wagner threw his medal into the auditorium for second place – so many defendants lack of respect. The news that national coach Joachim Löw did not take him for the squad for the 2018 World Cup reached Wagner during the training of FC Bayern, whereupon tears flowed. The consequence of Wagner: After eight games and five goals for the national team, it was over. With the national coach, he sent a greetings via Instagram: « For me it is clear that with my way of always speaking openly, honestly and directly, I don’t seem to be doing with the coaching team. »
As a player, the new FCA trainer followed a possible coaching career as a player
Wagner always wanted to go up – But while he was not in the very first row as a player, he should succeed as a coach. For this, Wagner built up early. He already followed a possible coaching career during player times and made notes about the strengths and weaknesses of his respective trainers. In one Kicker-InterView shortly after the end of his player career, he said: « I enjoy the leadership and is the key for me to be a good coach. » At the same time, he would not be bent and continue to say his opinion. That Wagner is now going to FC Augsburgmay surprise some. It fits with Wagner, who was never afraid of taking supposedly unusual steps in his career. When he went to the MSV Duisburg as a Bayern talent, he did not see that as a problem: « To go to the second division now, it is not a step backwards for me. I played mostly in the second team at Bavaria and even took a step forward. »
FC Augsburg is now one step forward. Perhaps a bigger step would have been possible – Wolfsburg, Hoffenheim and other clubs are also said to have been interested, which are also financially stronger than the FCA. It is apparently fitting for Wagner now. How well he and FC Augsburg go together will now be shown.
