Sheep and goats introduced in Belgium must be inspected before their departure and may only cross the border with an official health certificate. This emphasizes the Federal Agency for the Safety of the Food Chain (FAVV), now with the approaching Sacrifice Party private individuals will buy more sheep and goats.

With the passage of the Blauwtong virus, the Belgian cattle farmer suffered heavy losses especially with sheep and that increases the chance that people will purchase the animals in other countries. But, the FASFC warns, « Due to the recent outbreaks of infectious animal diseases in Europe, the import of animals without a health certificate is a danger to the Belgian herd ».

The animals must be approved in the country of origin by a veterinarian before they cross the border. « The traders are already aware, but we want to make it clear that private individuals should also be in line, » says Hélène Bonte, spokeswoman for the FASFC.
