Why women freeze their egg cells-and who should pay for it: SP-wife makes an explosive demand

Social Freezing is trendy: In 2023, over 2500 women in Switzerland had their eggs freezing. SP national councilor Farah Rumy wants to make the procedure cheaper-only: whose costs?

The number of women rises to put their desire to have children on hold. At minus 196 degrees they have their egg cells preserved to increase the chance of being able to become more than 40. Over 2500 women made use of so -called social freezing in Switzerland in 2023. Three times more than in 2019, as federal surveys show.

SP national councilor Farah Rumy finds this a positive development, especially with regard to equality. Children and career: freezing the egg cells makes it easier for women not to have to choose one of both. « For many women, it is extremely relieving if they have the option to start a family later, » says Rumy.

« Many women can’t afford it »

The Solothurn woman believes that all women should have access to treatment – regardless of their financial options. « There are many women who think about freezing the egg cells, but cannot afford it, » she says. Withdrawal costs around CHF 4,500 to CHF 6,000 per attempt, plus the costs for storage – around CHF 400 per year – and the possible insertion of the egg cells.
