Fake network purchases for multimillion amounts stopped

In the collaboration project, which took place during the fourth quarter of 2024, the Swedish Consumer Agency shared reports on fake online stores to the police, which in turn shared them to Nordea, Swedbank, Handelsbanken and SEB.

The police also shared pure police reports to the banks, who, with the help of their experts, examined the fake online stores and then turned off their ability to pay by debit card.

– The Consumer Agency had received a lot of tips from the public about websites, at the same time we knew that the banks have the opportunity to remove the payment solution at rogue online stores. We came to the conclusion that we could stop more about all the shared information that is not regulated as personal data, says Anna-Lena Tapper, project manager at the police’s national fraud center.

For three months the payment opportunity was stopped at around 1,300 fake online stores and almost 239,000 purchases were denied.

It is difficult to know exactly how much money has been stopped – consumers may have tried to pay several times when the first payment has not gone through, but a total of SEK 134 million – an increase of SEK 57 million compared to the third quarter of the same year.
