Face of Amersfoort’s wall painting Anne Frank erased
A portrait of Anne Frank on a sound wall in Amersfoort has been destroyed. An unknown perpetrator has shifted Frank’s face. This is evident from reporting from RTV Utrecht. The wall painting has been on the inside of a sound wall along the A28 in Stadsbos Nimmerdor for sixteen years. Nothing is known about a motive.
When the mural was destroyed is also unclear. The portrait was made sixteen years ago by artist Bas van Oudheusden, who shortly before read the diary of Anne Frank and immortalized her with graffiti on the sound wall. Many people in Amersfoort were happy with the illegal artwork, later the city council also ruled that the graffiti drawing was not vandalism. Commissioned by the municipality, the wall painting was recently restored.
Artist Van Oudheusden told RTV Utrecht on Friday that he is « not extremely angry. » « It was not destroyed by a number of boys who came by. It is quite neatly done. It feels like a message is behind it, » he says. Van Oudheusden does not yet know whether he will restore the mural. He would like to get in touch with the perpetrator to understand the message.
