Expert is critical of Prince Joachim’s decisions: « It can’t stay »

Absence has begun to arouse attention.
Since Prince Joachim took over as defense industry attaché in Paris in 2020 and later in Washington, his official commitment as a member of the Danish royal house has been significantly reduced. And it is now embarking on a debate about how long a royal can be so absent and still represent official protections.
According to a statement mentioned by TV 2, Prince Joachim has only participated in one single official event for the past two and a half years. It took place on February 8, 2023 at the opening of the National Defense Technology Center. Since then, the calendar has been empty of official appearances.
Modest presence arouses concern
Prince Joachim is the patron of 25 organizations, which range widely from Aalborg Zoo and the Danish Boys Choir to the Diabetes Association and the School Ship Denmark. And although several of these institutions continue to appreciate the connection, there is now criticism from royal house expert Lars Hovbakke Sørensen.
« It can’t be in many years yet that he can’t officially participate in his protections, » he says to TV 2.
At the same time, he emphasizes that the role of patron requires some visibility if it is to maintain its meaning and function in the public.
Organizations are still backing up
Despite the long absence, among the organizations represented by the prince, there are still great support for him. The Association of Denmark’s Veterans and Veteran Support says that they have had a few informal meetings with the prince annually since he traveled abroad. In addition, he has sent digital greetings to Copenhagen Goodwill Ambassadors.
Chairman of Denmark’s Veterans, Carsten Rasmussen, continues to emphasize the trust and recognition of the prince’s role:
« Having Prince Joachim as a patron is of great importance to us. Prince Joachim goes very positively into the work and he opens many doors because he has a huge network and can name our name, the places he comes. »
However, the organizations do not hide the fact that a more frequent participation would be desirable.
