Expansion confirmed, again three Slovenes in the ABA League, what will be the competition system?

Expanding the ABA League to 20 clubs, which has been rumored for several months, is at the door. At the virtual assembly, club owners confirmed the planned expansion to a maximum of 20 clubs in the coming season and gave the green light for conversations with interested teams who would like to participate in the first ABA next season.

These include Illyria, who could also make a promotion between the elite in the event of a defeat in the third match of the Bosnia finals after yesterday in Tivoli failed a big throw and the Sarajevo team equalized to 1: 1. The league management also confirms changes to the rules that would allow the maximum of 10 clubs from one country, which would be a significant jump from the six teams so far. The rule is primarily concerned with Serbian basketball, who wants (even) more representatives among the elite.

Following the successful inclusion of Dubai, many foreign teams, including Romanian Cluj and Austrian Vienna, expressed their desire to participate in the league, and for a long time it has been talked about a club from Abu Dhabi, who would go in the Dubai footsteps. At the General Meeting, they set up rules for assigning special invitations to the teams, which also take into account where the team came from and favor clubs from Europe.

What the system of the competition will be in the future is not yet known. There are several variants in the air, if the expansion to 20 clubs will be expanded in the first season, the teams would be divided into two groups of 10 and then continued with the quarterfinals, semi -finals and finals, similar to the European Cup system. The teams from the lower half would compete in the existence group. According to this proposal, the teams would play two matches less than before, but the system is far from deceiving and can still change a lot in the coming weeks.
