Exercise submarine search on the coast of Iceland


NATO’s submarine search training began on the coast of Iceland today and will last for the next two weeks. Icelanders are the host nation of the exercise, but the Coast Guard considers it important to come to practice like this.

The exercise is called Dynamic Mongoose and is an annual exercise of the NATO Alliance (NATO). The Coast Guard helicopter and the crew on the Freyja guard ship took today.

Some foreign ships and helicopters participate in the exercise, including the Dutch ship Trumpet But also German diesel -powered submarine. The ships arrived here last week.

The exercise starts here in Iceland, but is slowly moving towards Norway, says Ásgeir Erlendsson, Information Officer of the Coast Guard, in a conversation with mbl.is.

Today, the Coast Guard’s helicopter team got to get involved in following a submarine and then a sailor got to drop out of the helicopter down to the submarine and back up.

« Then there is an extensive part of the exercise, where the staff of the Defense Division of Gæsla operate in the security area at Keflavik Airport, » says Ásgeir.

The submarine search exercise runs until 9 May. The Icelandic Coast Guard has been organizing the exercise in collaboration with the Foreign Ministry’s Defense Office and the Northwood Northwood Northwood Board of Directors.
