Ex-Rector of KFU sentenced to 22 years in colony
The court in Moscow on May 28 sentenced the former rector of Kazan Federal University (KFU) to Ilshat Gafurov. He was found guilty of incitement in the late 90s to two attempts on criminal authority from Elabuga Aidar Israfilov, one of which ended with his murder in the capital. The defendant, who is 64 years old, received an actually lifelong term of 22 years in a maximum security colony.
Before the verdict, the defense of Ilshat Gafurova completed performances in the debate of the parties. Lawyer Alexei Paramonov once again said that the charge against the ex-director of the KFU is based on the testimony of former leaders of the Organizer Community (OPS) of the 29th Complex, including Adyghan Salyakhov, serving a long term.
“The possibility of a reservation of Gafurov cannot be excluded,” said lawyer Paramonov.
The side of the defense did not agree that Mr. Gafurov’s fault was proved, and asked him to justify him or stop criminal prosecution due to the expiration of the statute of limitations. The defense also noted that Mr. Gafurov was previously checked for involvement in the murder of Idar Israfilov, but back in 2002, the Tatarstan prosecutor’s office issued a decision to refuse to institute criminal proceedings in relation to the then rector “due to the lack of a crime in his actions”. According to the law, this decision could be canceled through the court, as it was, for example, in the criminal case of the ex-governor of the Khabarovsk Territory Sergey Furgal (sentenced to 22 years for murders and attempts committed in the early 2000s), but in this case there was no appeal.
Speaking with the last word, Mr. Gafurov himself spoke for a long time about his activity as the head of Elabuga and the rector of KFU. He denied his involvement in the murder, said that he had no conflict with Mr. Israfilov. And that he was not connected with the “29th complex”. According to Mr. Gafurov, who, incidentally, is consistent with the original version of the investigation, there was another authority – Airat Shakirov (in 2001 was killed).
“When the investigation began, they told me: admit, we will still prove that you are to blame. And how can I prove what I did not do? It seems that if you are telling the truth, then it is perceived as if you are trying to evade responsibility. How then to prove your innocence? I think that over time, everything will fall into place, all the arguments presented by me will give an idea of my non -involvement in this crime and the far -fetched accusation against me, ”the former rector said.
Judge Olga Chistova, however, did not heed the arguments of the defense and sentenced Ilshat Gafurov to the 8th and 18th years of the imprisonment for each of the episodes.
After a partial addition of punishments, 22 years in a maximum security colony came out. Also, by the decision of the judge, he will have to compensate the victims in the amount of 60 million rubles.
In the debate of the state prosecution, we recall asked For Mr. Gafurov, who led KFU for more than ten years, a 25-year term, and also asked to satisfy the lawsuit of the victims of 185 million rubles.
The defense will appeal the verdict as illegal and unreasonable, noting that for some reason, not one of the many arguments about the innocence of the scientist, although only because of inconsistencies in the testimony could send a resonance case for a new investigation.
