A research project commissioned by the Foreign Office examines the role of Austrian diplomats as an accomplice, mit and victims at the time of the Nazi regime and their career in the post-war period.
The battle for Vienna was over for three days, the Second World War was only to end in three weeks and the second republic was still in the labor, when Austrian diplomats came together on April 16, 1945 in the bombed Federal Chancellery in Vienna to re -establish the diplomatic service seven years after the dissolution. Exactly 80 years later, the Foreign Ministry invited to a symposium on the diverse role of Austrian diplomats in the Nazi era: « 1938-1945: The members of the Austrian foreign service ».
The Alois Mock Hall, the former marble hall with the magnificent ceiling frescoes on the historic battles, populated by emperors and state chancellor Metternich, gave the ambience for the presentation of the history. Ex-minister Alexander Schallenberg Two years ago had given the impetus for the research project, which was overdue compared to Germany and was commissioned the historical presentation set up in the ministry in 2019.
