The A12 between the Netherlands and Antwerp was completely blocked on Wednesday afternoon in the direction of Antwerp due to a serious accident at Leugenberg (Ekeren). The nuisance may be of a longer duration, reports the Flemish Traffic Center, which also warns of a lot of crowds in and around Antwerp through the Ascension Weekend.
In the accident in Ekeren, a passenger car was pinched on Wednesday afternoon between two trucks. The traffic on the A12 towards Antwerp immediately stopped. The traffic center warns that the nuisance can take a long time because the emergency services have their hands full with the handling of the accident.
Locally, the traffic on the A12 in the direction of Antwerp must leave the highway via exit 13 Kanaaldok B1-B2 and then follow the diversion to driveway 16 Ekeren. However, that is particularly difficult. As an alternative, the Traffic Center recommends the R2 through the port area, where although there is also nuisance because of the works on the Beverentunnel. The Liefkenshoek tunnel has not been made toll -free until further notice.

Particularly much traffic due to Ascension Weekend
The Flemish Traffic Center also warns that it is very busy all afternoon on the Flemish motorways through the Ascension Weekend. Around 2 pm 150 kilometers of traffic jams were measured, at 4.30 pm it was already more than 250 kilometers.

Since 11 am the file barometer has been in the red at the traffic center. Especially in the region around Antwerp there is a lot of traffic jam. On the roads on and around the Antwerp Ring were already many accidents today. « The traffic jam of accidents and activities contributes to the higher traffic of the Ascension Weekend, » says Peter Bruyninckx of the Flemish Traffic Center.
The evening before the Ascension Weekend is known at the Traffic Center as one of the busiest pointed days of the year. « For many people, an extended weekend starts, » explains Bruyninckx. « Many then head towards the coast with the nice weather, although that is a little less today. »
