« It’s summer. The partial period has passed. I go home my parents in Vendée. For a season on the coast, I got it too late. I need money. I had other plans but the factory recruited. So I sign for a two -month temporary contract in a cake factory.
“My day begins in the locker room. I put my pair of safety shoes. Then my Charlotte, my blouse and my ear caps. I’m ready. Inside, we communicate between us by gestures where we try to yell stronger than the machine. I am assigned to the same position as yesterday: at the end of the carpet, line C. The place releases a sweet vanilla perfume quickly disgusting. The cookies are in their case. Cases in their boxes. I have to make two rows of five in a box positioned beforehand. Turn the box. That’s it.
“At the other end of the line, the pastry chefs prepare the mixture before it is cooked. Simple game of assembly of ingredients in monstrous quantities. There is a leak in this area. Samuel and Maud, two young temporary workers, are responsible for cleaning everything. They tell me that the smell is “disgusting”, the “sticky” thing. It is very close to the ovens and the heat is hellish.
